Are you a dedicated psychiatrist looking for a unique opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges? Join us at the Physician Affiliate Group of New York (PAGNY) within the Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) for New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H). We’re on the hunt for passionate professionals who want to provide comprehensive mental health care within the NYC jail system.
About the Role:
As a psychiatrist here, you’ll be an integral part of a collaborative team that provides vital mental health care to those in the jail system. Your work will touch upon various aspects of psychiatric services, from assessing new admissions to creating individualized treatment plans. Our goal? To offer safe, holistic, and evidence-based interventions to a diverse population coping with everything from serious mental illness to the everyday stresses of incarceration.
We’re proud to offer some of the most innovative treatment modalities in the country, such as:
- Specialized housing units for those with serious mental health issues
- A 24-hour psychiatric service available across all facilities
- Engaging arts programming for creative expression
- Comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training
- Integrated re-entry services to support individuals transitioning back to the community
In this role, you will collaborate closely with other mental health and medical professionals while engaging with facility security staff to ensure a safe and supportive environment. Your experience can vary, and while prior work in correctional settings isn’t mandatory, a willingness to adapt and communicate effectively is crucial.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations and follow-up care for individuals in the mental health service.
- Offer consultative support on diagnosis and treatment to non-prescribing mental health and medical teams.
- Actively participate in team meetings and help create and adjust treatment plans.
- Assess patients for the need for a higher level of care, such as hospitalization, and maintain continuity during and after such transitions.
- Document all clinical activities accurately in our electronic medical records system.
- Provide clinical supervision to psychiatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and volunteers.
- Engage in weekly supervision with psychiatric leadership to foster continuous professional development.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM
What We’re Looking For:
- A Doctor of Medicine degree.
- Valid NYS medical license in good standing.
- Completion of a four-year accredited psychiatric residency program.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry by the ABPN.
- At least two years of experience caring for individuals with serious mental health issues in an institutional setting.
Why Join Us?
We believe in supporting our employees as much as they support their patients. Here’s what you can expect:
- Competitive pay that reflects your skills and experience.
- Access to exceptional medical plans starting at no cost from day one.
- Robust dental insurance coverage.
- Generous paid time off to recharge.
- Opportunities for loan forgiveness through the National Student Debt Forgiveness Center.
