About the Role: Lead Technical Excellence
As a Staff Engineer on our Atlas Data Federation and Archiving team, you’ll play a vital role in enhancing our federated query and data archiving systems. This isn’t just a coding gig — it’s a chance to lead technical efforts that ensure our systems are robust and reliable. You’ll be at the forefront of solving complex challenges in distributed systems, ensuring that our business-critical operations remain seamless and high-performing.
This position can be based in our vibrant offices in Austin, New York City, San Francisco, or Seattle, or you can work remotely from anywhere in the United States.
Key Responsibilities:

System Reliability & Performance
- Take charge of initiatives that boost system visibility, stability, and resource management.
- Craft and introduce cutting-edge autoscaling solutions for query execution and data processing.
- Reduce incident rates through comprehensive improvements in system resilience.
- Explore ways to lower operational costs in storage and query systems.

Technical Leadership
- Steer architectural decisions and conduct design reviews across engineering teams.
- Mentor and guide senior engineers focused on distributed systems design.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management to shape our technical roadmap.
- Promote cross-team technical initiatives and best practices.
- Participate in the on-call rotation, lending your expertise to incident responses and retrospectives.
- Systems Development
- Innovate enhancements for our distributed query execution engine.
- Optimize our data archival pipelines for greater throughput, durability, and reliability.
- Address design requirements for single-tenant isolation solutions.
Who You Are:
- You have 10+ years of software engineering experience, specializing in backend systems.
- Your ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly enables you to build consensus and make compelling arguments.
- A strong foundation in systems programming is essential; familiarity with Go and Java is a plus.
- Your experience with scalable distributed systems, particularly Kubernetes, is a bonus.
- You’ve got a proven track record in improving system reliability and driving operational excellence.
- Experience with large-scale data systems, such as data lakes or distributed databases, is essential.
- You’re knowledgeable about modern observability tools and practices.
- You’ve successfully led technical projects and mentored engineers on your team.
