Job title: Data Architect
Company: MongoDB
Job description:
Join Our Team as a Data Architect!
At MongoDB, we’re on a mission to empower innovators to transform industries by harnessing the power of data and software. We make it easier for organizations – whether they’re large enterprises or budding startups – to build, scale, and run modern applications. We help companies modernize their existing systems, embrace the latest innovations, and explore the exciting world of AI. Our flagship platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database available in over 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. With Atlas, businesses can seamlessly build and operate applications, no matter where they are – in the cloud, on-premises, or in a hybrid model. With a community of over 175,000 developers signing up each month and clients like Samsung and Toyota leveraging our technology for next-generation, AI-powered applications, it’s an exciting time to be with us!
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an enthusiastic Data Architect to join our expanding Data Architecture team. In this role, you’ll play a pivotal role in governing and managing data across our organization. Think of yourself as the bridge that connects our business objectives with the data engineering team. You’ll be designing data models and schemas to craft high-quality datasets in a mixed SQL and NoSQL environment, and you’ll drive projects all the way to completion. Plus, you’ll help populate our enterprise data catalog with crucial technical and business metadata, making data easily discoverable and advocating for best practices in enterprise data governance.
Where You’ll Work:
This position is open for remote work in Austin, New York City, Seattle, or California.
What You Bring to the Table:
- A solid 3+ years of experience building effective data models for structured and semi-structured data, including telemetry.
- Proficiency in SQL, with a bonus for familiarity with the MongoDB Query Language (MQL).
- Hands-on experience with at least one distributed query engine or cloud data warehouse, like Trino or BigQuery.
- A strong customer-centric mindset, focused on delivering tangible business value.
- Excellent skills in gathering requirements and collaborating with a diverse range of engineers and stakeholders.
- A basic understanding of Python and introductory Prompt Engineering.
- Knowledge of core concepts related to data lakes, data warehousing, and data security.
- Familiarity with data catalog features, business glossaries, metadata management, and data lineage.
- Insights into cloud computing concepts and big data storage formats like Parquet and Iceberg.
- The ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- A passion for lifelong learning and a drive for continuous improvement.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Collaborate with Product Owners and stakeholders to outline data requirements, using your expertise to add value and ensure clarity.
- Evaluate incoming product telemetry data, ensuring it aligns with documentation and meets expectations through rigorous testing and verification.
- Design data models and schemas for our internal data lake and data warehouse, making them ready for analysis and data science.
- Create and implement test plans to validate data accuracy and ensure performance meets our service level agreements (SLAs).
- Develop SQL-based data pipelines with a focus on consistency and accuracy.
- Establish and maintain data security standards for data access.
- Document metadata and data lineage in our enterprise data catalog, enabling self-service data exploration.
How We Measure Success:
- In your first 3 months, you’ll be fully on board with our Business and Data teams.
- By month 6, you’ll have delivered at least one well-documented data model that brings real value to the organization.
- After a year, you’ll have successfully contributed multiple data models across various use cases and feel at home with all aspects of our internal data platform.
